Hello and welcome
My name is Janice Lizabeth and I create joyful art that makes people smile and feel happy. I help celebrate the special bond that my customers have with their family and pets. Living by the ocean in beautiful Byron Bay, Australia I care very much about nature, and about preserving its diversity and precious resources for future generations. My home and art studio are located inside two converted shipping containers which I share with my imaginary friend Sebold the maned wolf. In the garden live possums, carpet snakes, yellow robins, bandicoots, wallabies, cicadas and laughing kookaburras.
The joys of life
When I look back at my childhood growing up in the south of England some of the precious moments that made an impression on me include the simple joys of playing in the garden. I loved mud, apple trees, birds, pebbles and stones. I loved our neurotic cat Tomasina who I always used to go hunting for in the back yard. I would find her curled up in the hedgerow and would give her a cuddle while she purred.
I loved lying on the soft grass and making daisy chains. I enjoyed picking buttercups and putting them under my Mum’s chin to see if she liked butter (it’s a yes if they shine yellow on the skin). I loved teddy bears, walks in the woods in wellington boots with my family, Sunday roast dinners and chocolate cake.
The joys of a simple life with family, good friends, love and laughter, and being outside in nature really stand out for me. I think that my upbringing and where I come from shines through in the art that I make today, and is one of the reasons that I make joyful art for happy homes.
Writing stories, drawing and painting, together with maths, were the subjects I excelled best at in school. I was never really impressed with having to go to school. I remember winning the knobbliest knees contest, and struggling to eat lumpy semolina pudding for lunch, thereby ending up on the ‘slow’ table because I hated it.
A highlight of my young artistic life was having one of my paintings framed and hung on the wall in pride of place by my older brother’s best friend Graham. That was the first time I realised that I could be an artist, because people found joy and value from what I created.
As a teenager, through the good intentions of my parents, I was steered into the perceived safer career of Graphic Design rather than the more dangerous unknown territories that symbolised Fine Art. I found myself becoming a graphic designer working on computers in the field of publishing. This is how I earned my living for many years putting the joy of drawing and creating with real paints to one side.
The trials of life
The years of long hours on computers finally cracked me though, and I faced some quite tough life challenges. Challenges that I am sure you can relate to. I suffered a health crisis for the first time in my life, which left me lying on the floor for months in severe pain with three bulging discs. And the business that I had worked with for over nine years suddenly and unexpectedly went into liquidation.
So there I was… lying in pain on the floor without a job. To say I became depressed was an understatement. I felt like I had finally reached that stage in life where I was no longer needed and would be put out to grass… but dusty brown grass with no sight of fresh daisies or buttercups.
And this is where the joy and value of creating found me again. It took several months to get back on my feet. Then, armed with a standing desk and a new set of acrylic paints I began to create pictures that made me happy, that made me smile and that gave me joy. I also discovered that these paintings gave joy to others as well. It felt like coming home and I loved it!
